VETERAN JOURNALIST AND NONPROFIT COMMUNICATIONS EXPERT AMY SALTZMAN JOINS THE HATCHER GROUP
Public Affairs Firm Works to Advance Progressive Policy Change
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Amy Saltzman, a veteran journalist, bestselling author and nonprofit communications expert, is joining The Hatcher Group, a public affairs firm that works with national and regional nonprofit organizations to advance progressive policy change.
Saltzman, who will be a senior associate with the firm, was most recently communications director for Appleseed, the Washington-based network of 16 nonprofit public interest justice centers in the United States and Mexico focused on education, health care, immigrant rights and financial access.
She previously spent 16 years as a writer and editor at U.S. News & World Report, where she covered such issues as the workplace, education and the family; and three years as the web and ezine editor for Parents’ Action for Children, an early childhood advocacy group.
Established in 2000, The Hatcher Group (www.thehatchergroup.com) is a full-service communications and public policy firm dedicated to advancing social change by helping its clients communicate effectively with policymakers, the media and the public. Located in Bethesda, Md., the firm works with major national foundations, research institutions, national and regional coalitions, government agencies, and numerous nonprofit organizations. The firm works on issues such as juvenile justice, foster care, early learning, after-school and summer learning opportunities, environmental education, the death penalty, workforce development, asset building, and the impact of tax and budget proposals on working families.
“Amy is a gifted writer, editor and communications expert who will be a major player in our efforts to advance positive social change,” said Ed Hatcher, president of The Hatcher Group.
Saltzman’s hire continues a period of growth for the firm, which now employs a mix of professionals with extensive experience in journalism, public relations and nonprofit and legislative arenas. The Hatcher Group works for dozens of clients across the country, including the Annie E. Casey Foundation, the Open Society Institute, the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation, the No Child Left Inside Coalition, Washington Area Women’s Foundation, the Jim Casey Youth Opportunities Initiative, Youth Build USA, Philanthropic Advisors, Eckerd Family Foundation, Seedco, and Johns Hopkins University.
“Not only does Amy have extensive connections in the journalism world, but she also has all the right news instincts about what makes a story compelling to reporters,” said Angie Cannon, a partner at the firm.
Saltzman has extensive experience in conceiving and crafting communications for nonprofit groups and coalitions. In her role at Appleseed, she developed and implemented a communications strategy and advised the organization’s network of 16 centers in communications work.
Saltzman has worked for several newspapers and magazines and served as a deputy press secretary to Sen. Daniel Patrick Moynihan. She also is the author of “Downshifting: Reinventing Success on a Slower Track,” a 1991 national bestseller that explored five alternative strategies for professional success.
Saltzman earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Michigan. She has been an active volunteer in schools, including serving on the board of Lafayette Elementary School in Washington, D.C. where she coordinated a partnership effort with a struggling school in Southeast D.C.
