Robert Johnston

Vice President

 

Robert Johnston is a communication strategist and writer/editor with nearly 20 years of combined experience in journalism and communications.  Robert worked for 12 years at Education Week, where he was an award-winning reporter covering federal and state policy, education finance, and urban education before becoming the assistant managing editor for state policy. He has worked for newspapers in California, Nevada, and Virginia.

 

Four years ago Robert joined CommunicationWorks, LLC, an education-focused communications firm in Washington, D.C.  As director of education policy and media, he developed campaign strategy, coordinated national coalitions, created communication materials, and led media outreach for organizations including The Wallace Foundation, Center on Education Policy, National Assessment Governing Board, National Board for Professional Teaching Standards, and Council of the Great City Schools. Robert worked with coalitions that included the Council of Chief State School Officers, National Association of State Boards of Education, National Conference of State Legislatures, and National Governors Association.

 

A former Peace Corps volunteer in Guatemala, Robert speaks Spanish and has reported on education in Cuba and Honduras. He studied communications and elementary education at Lewis & Clark College, where he earned his bachelor’s degree. He lives in Arlington, VA, with his wife and three children.
