Promoting equality, fairness and opportunity
Across the country, far too many people face entrenched barriers to leading full, productive and rewarding lives. Some are stung by discrimination based on their sexuality or gender identity. Others are shut out of opportunities to live in strong communities with access to jobs and amenities. And the criminal justice system incarcerates millions while failing to prepare offenders to lead productive lives when they return to the community. The numbers are staggering:
- From 1980 to 2008, the number of people incarcerated in America quadrupled–from roughly 500,000 to 2.3 million.
- African-Americans now constitute nearly 1 million of the total 2.3 million incarcerated population.
- 15 percent to 43 percent of gay and transgender workers have experienced discrimination on the job.
In communities across the country, nonprofit organizations are redoubling their efforts to address these inequities and achieve true justice for all.
The Hatcher Group works with a range of these organizations to advance social justice for disadvantaged people and communities – through public awareness campaigns, legislative initiatives, advocacy and smart communications. Our work has ranged from helping to repeal the death penalty in Maryland and strengthening the reach of community-based law clinics to opening more affordable housing in strong communities.
