Building Support for Early Learning and Literacy in Arkansas

Project Overview


The Arkansas Campaign for Grade-Level Reading (AR-GLR) seeks to raise awareness about the importance of early learning and literacy and mobilize action to ensure all children read on grade level by the end of third grade. In 2014, The Hatcher Group began working to manage communications and public will-building for AR-GLR, and we continue to work on the campaign to this day. We provide comprehensive support ranging from social media content and a monthly newsletter to developing communications campaigns about attendance, parent engagement, and early childhood development.

Our Strategy


In our work with AR-GLR, we:

  • Develop and execute strategic communications plans
  • Produce and disseminate the monthly newsletter
  • Create organic social content and graphics for Twitter and Facebook
  • Design annual progress reports and profiles on local early literacy initiatives
  • Update AR-GLR’s website’s content and design
  • Developed outreach materials for the Make Every Day Count attendance initiative
  • Crafted and executed a parent engagement campaign, Talking is Teaching: Talk, Read, Sing
  • Designed and helped write the award-winning report Moving the Needle on Grade-Level Reading in Arkansas: Impact, Influence and Leverage, a six-year retrospective that detailed improvements made in the campaign’s key impact areas
  • Created a logo and branding for Excel by Eight, AR-GLR’s new initiative to ensure all Arkansas children have equitable access to health care and education that maximizes their full potential
  • Developed outreach materials including social media graphics and toolkits, press releases, and a blog post launching the Excel by Eight initiative

Our Impact


  • “Everyone is talking about grade-level reading in Arkansas,” said a staffer with the Winthrop Rockefeller Foundation
  • Twitter account now has more than 1,300 followers
  • Facebook account now has more than 2,100 follower
  • Design award for Moving the Needle on Grade-Level Reading in Arkansas: Impact, Influence and Leverage, a six-year retrospective report detailing improvements made in the campaign’s key impact areas
