CASE STUDY: Public Health
U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Office of Connected Care
Helping Veterans Access Telehealth
The Department of Veterans Affairs’ Office of Connected Care (OCC) is improving healthcare access for all Veterans by encouraging the use of telehealth services. To encourage use of its telehealth services and train health practitioners and care receivers on how to use its telehealth offerings, as well as share stories about its innovative efforts to improve healthcare access for all Veterans, the Office of Connected Care works with The Hatcher Group to create training, how-to, and documentary-style videos and write blog posts.

Through documentary-style videos produced in collaboration with Reingold, we told the story of Jim Doray, a disabled veteran who uses telehealth services with great success, and his wife and primary caregiver, Paulina Doray. The two videos powerfully illustrate the impact that telehealth has had on Jim, allowing him to live the life he wants, where he wants, as well as on Paulina, as his primary caregiver.
We created training videos for use by health practitioners, care receivers, and Office of Connected Care staff. We also designed a motion graphic how-to video for My HealtheVet, VA’s online patient portal, to teach Veterans’ how to use the tool. And we interviewed Office of Connected Care staff and Veterans for articles for the VA’s blog, Vantage Point, including a series on the VA’s Centers of Excellence and the innovative work they are doing to improve telehealth for Veterans.
- Demonstrated the Office of Connected Care’s innovative efforts to improve healthcare access for all Veterans by showing the impact of this work through personal stories and motion graphic explainers
- Supported Veterans’ use of telehealth services so that their access to healthcare is not limited by where they live, by transportation access, or by mobility challenges
- Won 2019 Platinum MarComm Award from the Association of Marketing and Communication Professionals for My HealtheVet motion graphic video
