At The Hatcher Group, Hazel provides strategic communications development and policy outreach, mainly in the environmental and health practice areas.
Before joining The Hatcher Group, Hazel developed her communications and storytelling skills at a variety of non-profits on issues of sustainability and environmental justice. She has promoted environmental initiatives at the grassroots in Portland, Oregon, and at the federal policy-level in Washington, DC. Hazel’s communications experience has also involved quantitative work. She has previous experience in social and environmental data analysis and has proven her ability to synthesize and present data in various mediums and contexts.
As a part of her undergraduate degree, she wrote her senior thesis on the topic of natural disaster recovery in North Carolina. Her research involved stakeholder engagement, socioeconomic analyses, and legislative research, from which she developed a strategy for the North Carolina government to integrate sustainability and climate adaption into the state’s recovery plan.
Hazel holds a bachelor’s degree in environmental policy and global health from Duke University. She also minored in Chinese and, after spending a summer working and studying in Beijing, is proficient in the language.
